Expanding Clutches & Brakes

Airflex Expanding Clutches & Brakes utilize a rugged tire-like neoprene and cord tube that expands radially outward when pressurized. The expanding tube forces a friction surface against an inner cylindrical drum surface. The rate at which the tube is pressurized determines the rate at which element torque increases. Final tube pressure and rotating speed determines the element torque capacity.

Product Sizing

Expanding elements are identified by the inside drum diameter in inches to which they expand and the width in inches of their friction lining. For instance, a size 16E475 is designed to expand to a 16 inch diameter drum and has a friction lining width of 4.75 inches

E

Airflex E elements are primarily used as slip clutches or tension brakes; however, they can also be used for general power transmission service. Torque is transmitted from the friction shoes to the element housing through torque bars. Engagement occurs when air expands the actuating tube forcing the friction shoes against the inside diameter of the drum. Release springs assist shoe disengagement and counteracts centrifugal force.

FEATURES:

  • E elements are ideal for moderate to heavy duty clutch and brake service.

  • E elements are suited for medium speed cyclic applications which are subject to large thermal loads.

  • When used with an air agitating ventilated drum, the E element provides excellent slip clutch and tension brake service.

  • Torque Capacities* Up To: 1,010,000 lb·in, 114.000 N·m

  • Typical Applications: Construction equipment, marine winches, metalworking machinery, slip clutches, tension brakes

  • Standard Sizes: 12E475, 14E475, 16E475, 19E475, 21.5E475, 24E475m 27E475, 30E600, 34E600, 40E700

EB

Airflex EB element assemblies are used in both clutch and brake service with light starting loads. The EB is similar in design to the CB except that it is an expanding type unit.   The primary function of the EB design and construction is the Airflex torsional resilient principal made possbile by the transmission of power through the side walls of the flexible neoprene and cord actuating tube.  This flexibilty also permits minor shaft misalignment.

ER

Airflex ER couplings are expanding units with neoprene facing. As such, they combine the advantages of a flexible and disconnect coupling. Engagement of the element should occur when there is no speed differential between driving and driven shaft.

FEATURES:

  • ER elements are used as shaft couplings or holding brakes where engagement occurs at zero speed differential between element and drum.

  • The ER is ideal for applications in which a disconnect is required without stopping the prime mover or in which the driving and or driven equipment must be frequently withdrawn from the drive.

  • Torque Capacities* Up To: 118,000 lb·in, 13.300 N·m

  • Typical Applications: Centrifuges, core expanders, laundry machines, textile machines, tire building machines

  • Standard Sizes: 3ER125, 6ER200, 8ER250, 10ER300, 12ER350, 14ER400, 16ER475, 19ER475, 21.5ER475, 24ER475
